DESERT CAMPING EXPERIENCE

Authentic Sahara Camping in Merzouga – Beyond Standard Desert Camps

At Merzouga Treks, we offer more than typical commercial desert camps. Instead of large tented villages with crowds and noise, we focus on a quiet, well-located Sahara camping experience in the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Led by local Berber guides, this experience helps you connect with the desert: sunsets, starry skies, calm nights, and the peaceful rhythm of Saharan life.

📍 Camp Location: Deep in the Merzouga Sahara (Erg Chebbi)

Many desert camps are placed in a crowded “camp line” (camp next to camp), which often means noise at night and less privacy. Our camp options are located deeper in the Sahara of Merzouga, in a beautiful area where you can enjoy the dunes, calm atmosphere, and a real desert feeling.

This location is also close to the biggest sand dunes in Merzouga, which is perfect for travelers who love hiking on the dunes, sunset viewpoints, and long walks in the sand.

🥾 Perfect for Hiking & Desert Walks

If you like exploring, you can do a beautiful desert hike near the camp. Walk in the dunes, reach high viewpoints, and enjoy the silence of the Sahara.

  • High dunes viewpoints for sunrise & sunset
  • Peaceful area away from crowded camp zones
  • Great for photos and stargazing

🐪 Camel, 4×4 Transfer, or Nomad Walk

You can reach the camp by camel trek, or by 4×4 transfer. For adventure lovers, we can also arrange a walking experience like nomads across the dunes.

  • Camel ride at sunset (classic experience)
  • 4×4 transfer available (no camel ride needed)
  • Optional hiking walk in the dunes

How to Choose the Right Desert Camp (Read This Before Booking)

Choosing the right desert camp can save you money — and save your night. Some camps look great online but end up being noisy, crowded, or far from the real dunes. Here is what we recommend checking before you book.

A night in the Sahara is often the highlight of a Morocco trip — or the biggest disappointment. If you choose well, you get real dunes, real quiet, and a night you will remember for years. If you choose wrong, you may end up near the road with noise, crowds, and a “camp village” feeling. The difference is usually: location, crowds, and what you actually get for the price.

1) Location (Most Important)

Location can make or break the desert experience. Ask two questions: How close is the camp to the dunes? and How far is it from other camps and main tracks?

  • Close to dunes: you should step outside and be in the sand quickly.
  • Away from the “camp line”: fewer nearby camps usually means more peace.
  • Less traffic: fewer quads / loud music from next camps.

2) Size & Crowds

Bigger camps often host large groups. That can mean queues, noise, and less personal service. Smaller options usually feel more intimate and calm.

  • Small group vibe = quieter night
  • More attention from staff
  • Better desert atmosphere

3) Comfort vs. Experience

Decide what matters most: simple authentic vibes, or higher comfort. The best camps balance both: good sleep + real desert feeling.

  • Do you want a private bathroom?
  • Do you want total silence or a social vibe?
  • Do you want a wild night deep in the dunes?

4) Price & What’s Included

Some camps advertise a cheap price, then add extra charges for dinner, transfers, or camel rides. Always check the full package before deciding.

  • Dinner & breakfast included?
  • Camel trek or 4×4 transfer included?
  • Any hidden fees (water, pickup, taxes)?

5) Reviews (Use Them Smartly)

Reviews can help, but they don’t always show the full story. Use reviews to spot red flags (cleanliness, noise, food). Then ask direct questions about location, crowds, and what’s included.

Our tip: Don’t choose only by “stars”. Choose by the experience you want.
